Artist Statement

In my visual art practice, I explore the flow of energies—felt but unseen—and the cyclicality of such forces. Through art-making, I believe that these energies can be envisaged, circulated and recalled, allowing us to continuously perceive beauty in the world around us. Working in series, I approach this subject from different angles via diverse mediums and motifs ranging from painting to sculpture, and from figuration to abstraction.

The Energetic Cycle series was the starting point of my ongoing artistic inquiry. Using acrylic, oil and tempera painting techniques, this body of work depicts plants in a representational style, while using the abstract application of colour to visualize the energies that the plants emanate. Harnessing childhood memories of playful interactions with the natural environment, I imaginatively painted plants that were found on the roadside. These works are influenced by the traditional Japanese representation of nature. Just as the natural motifs in the Japanese tradition often carry animistic worldviews, my work also seeks the transcendental in images of nature.

Rhythm is a series of mixed-media assemblage works. With this series, I hope to bring out the inherent beauty I find in the raw materials used in tempera painting such as gypsum plaster and pigments. Within box frames, I assembled pieces of painted plaster in accompaniment with dried flowers and plants to encapsulate their organic beauty. In creating a visual rhythm through form and colour, this series attempts to represent harmony with the natural world.

The Toward Light series focuses on human emotions and explores how such energies might be embodied. Influenced by the music of Tomiyama Yuko, I reflected on my emotional response around my interpersonal relationships and felt the need to express these energies through colour. I began producing this series of abstract oil paintings. From human emotions such as love and sorrow to the feeling of the presence of light, I attempt to convey, through colour, the intangible energies that I cannot express through representational images.
